New LCMS for Toxicology

The Toxicology Unit has recently purchased a new LCMS (Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) system for the analysis of drugs of abuse. The new Thermo LCQ Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer will enable an improved service for drugs of abuse, including faster turnaround times, lower detection limits and a wider range of analytes. This represents a major step forward for the Toxicology Unit, bringing some of the most modern methods of analysis into the routine laboratory. The move to LCMS will also allow existing separate methods to be combined, streamlining workflow through the department and freeing staff time for other work. It is anticipated that the first routine work will be moved onto the LCMS in September, with further work added over the next few months as our repertoire grows.
