Purpose of the test
Description: Increased levels of methaemoglobin are found in cases of drug oxidation, Haemoglobin M's, methaemoglobin reductase deficiency and unstable haemoglobins. Although methaemoglobin is present with the haemogobin M's, it cannot be adequately measured by this technique.

Sample Requirements
Minimum 1 ml EDTA blood. It is recommended a FBC is performed and results sent with sample for interpretive purposes.

Sample must be received in the laboratory on the day of collection

Factors affecting results or interpretation
Recent blood transfusion.
Raised reticulocyte levels and/or raised WBC levels may affect assay.
