Anti Cardiolipin antibodies
Immunology and Allergy Overview / Directory
Purpose of the test
Anti-phospholipid syndrome (APS), also known as Hughes syndrome, presents with diverse clinical symptoms, the more overt being thrombosis and recurrent miscarriage. APS is characterised by the presence of autoantibodies to a variety of phospholipid molecules, among which, is cardiolipin. The detection of anti-cardiolipin antibodies is a major part of the laboratory investigation of APS and of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) where up to 50% of patients also have these autoantibodies. Both IgG and IgM autoantibodies are of clinical relevance and to that end we offer an anti-cardiolipin assay for both isotypes.
