Anti dsDNA antibodies
Immunology and Allergy Overview / Directory
Purpose of the test
Autoantibodies to double stranded DNA (dsDNA) are one of many autoantibodies to nuclear related antigens. They are of particular significance in the diagnosis and management of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) where there is evidence that the presence and quantity of antibody is related to disease activity. Hence, the quantitative determination of autoantibodies to dsDNA may act as a surrogate maker of therapeutic efficacy. SLE-like syndromes may be seen in response to certain drugs (drug induced lupus). This investigation is useful in differentiating true SLE from its drug-induced counterpart, as antibody to dsDNA is not found in the drug-induced form. The antigen used in this ELISA assay is a human recombinant dsDNA.
