Anti ENA antibodies
Immunology and Allergy Overview / Directory
Purpose of the test
The identification of autoantibodies to the ENA family is now standard in the investigation of the “rheumatological” disorders.
Antibodies to SS-A (Ro) and SS-B (La) are mainly associated with Sjogren’s syndrome but may be found in SLE and less frequently in similar disorders. Anti-Sm and anti-RNP are associated with SLE and mixed connective tissue disease. Anti-Scl 70 is associated with scleroderma while anti-Jo-1 is seen in dermatomyositis.
The screening test uses a mixture of the common ENAs (SS-A [Ro], SS-B [La], Scl 70, Sm/RNP, Sm and Jo-1) in an ELISA format. If a positive reaction is detected a further ELISA is used to identify the individual antigenic targets.
