Anti LKM1 blot
Immunology and Allergy Overview / Directory
Purpose of the test
Anti-liver kidney microsomal antibody 1 (LKM 1) is associated with type 2 autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). However, some patients with hepatitis C virus infection are also anti-LKM 1 positive. Anti-LKM 1 is detectable in conventional indirect immunofluorescence, but the pattern has been shown to cause confusion particularly when accompanied by anti-gastric parietal cell antibody. On occasion the IIF pattern of anti-LKM 1 can be impossible to distinguish from patterns due to antibody against other cytochromes of the P450 family. A solution to such problems is found in antigen specific assay, in this case anti-P450 2D6.
Sample Requirements
Serum 2.0 ml.
Storage and Transport
Samples may be stored at 4°C prior to despatch. The use of first class letter post without the need for coolant is sufficient.
Turnaround Time
Assay is performed weekly but samples with clinical urgency can be processed on the day of receipt. If this is required, a telephone call to this department prior to dispatch is essential.
Time Limit for Extra Tests

Factors affecting results or interpretation
All tests are compromised by prolonged transit times. For this reason, date of bleed and date of postage must be provided with each request.
