Purpose of the test

This ELISA based assay uses a highly purified human thyroid peroxidase (TPO) as antigen. The literature suggests that between 75% and 90% of patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis have anti-TPO antibodies. The autoantibody is also present in 75% of patients with Graves’ disease and some 60% with postpartum thyroiditis. Anti-TPO may also be found in sub-clinical hypothyroidism (normal free T4 and elevated TSH) and as part of the spectrum of autoimmune endocrinopathies.
