HCV genotyping
Liver Pathology Overview / Directory
Purpose of the test
In recent years, the clinical utility of HCV genotyping has been established. Published studies and recommendations from national agencies have concluded that accurate determination of genotype is important in the management of patients considering anti-HCV treatment.
The 2006 National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) panel concluded that determination of HCV genotype was important for choosing the optimal dose of interferon and ribaviron and length of treatment.

Factors affecting results or interpretation
(i) Heparin (anticoagulant) inhibits PCR amplification.
(ii) Reliable results are dependent on adequate specimen collection, transport and storage.
(iii) Failure to separate whole blood within 6 hours collection.
(iv) Failure to label specimen with patient name, date of birth and precise identifier
(v) Failure to fill in a consultation-request form, in particular clinical information and doctor to be notified of findings.
